Senior Scientist / Project Manager @ Philips Research

Jacek Kustra is a (senior) scientist and project manager working for Oncology Solutions in Philips Research. Passionate about innovation and making a difference in people’s lives, Jacek has a proven track record in multiple R&D environments during the last 10+ years in positions such as system architect, data scientist or project manager in application areas ranging from electronics design for diagnostic systems to complex algorithm development for cancer therapy devices. He holds a 5 year Licenciatura Degree in Electronics and Telecommunications, followed by a Masters (pre-bologna) in Biomedical Engineering, both in the University of Aveiro and a Ph.D. in Computational Geometry from the University of Groningen, Netherlands. With a core interest for complex challenges, knowledge and people, has been a key player in the development of multiple (healthcare) systems and co-authored over 40 Invention disclosures and research papers. Overall, determined to shape and make meaningful visions happen!

    Current clinical practices and guidelines rely on population based trials, from where an average patient is inferred. Although effective on a population basis, it does not guarantee an optimal treatment for each individual. Advances in data processing and AI algorithms provide a unique opportunity to make healthcare personalized. Not only clinical practice, but clinical research has the potential to leap forward with data-based hypothesis testing and consequent incorporation in clinical practice. However, incorporating AI into clinical practice has its own specific set of challenges and dangers. Understanding how to uniquely mix and interface human and machine intelligence is key towards addressing it. In this presentation, an overview of the above challenges, opportunities and specific solutions will be discussed.
